An ultramodern
full-service marina is located at Golconda, where
Lusk Creek converges with the Ohio River. The
marina, recognized as one of the finest in the area,
serves as the gateway to the Smithland Pool in the
Ohio River. It covers an 80-acre site and offers 206
slips.
In 1980, the completion of the Smithland Lock and
Dam near Hamletsburg elevated the normal river pool
stage by 15 feet, creating a veritable lake covering
23,000 acres and reaching 72.5 miles upriver to the
Uniontown Dam. This in turn has inundated a lot of
lowland area and created a tremendous fishery.
In the 51 mile stretch between Smithland Lock and
Dam and the Saline River, there are 10 major and 12
minor streams entering the Ohio River from the
Illinois side and 8 major and 5 minor streams from
the Kentucky side. Many of these streams are 20 to
30 feet in depth and are navigable as much as 6 or 7
miles upstream. |
